The Weiler Building

The Weiler Building, located at 921 Government Street and 609 Broughton Street in Victoria, British Columbia, is a historically significant landmark in the city's Old Town district. Constructed in 1899 by architect Thomas Sorby for Weiler Brothers Ltd., it stands as one of Victoria's earliest department stores. The building's design reflects the commercial architecture of the late 19th century, characterized by its three-story height, flat roof with stepped parapets, and prominent corner location at the intersection of Government and Broughton Streets. Notably, the building features Italianate architectural elements, including decorative window lintels, a panelled stringcourse between the first and second floors, and segmental-arched upper-floor windows. The upper cornice is adorned with scroll-cut sandwich brackets, adding to its architectural appeal.
