Downtown Victoria Scores!
Since 2013, the DVBA has been tracking pedestrian traffic downtown. Our business association was the first in British Columbia and the second in Canada to install digital pedestrian counters. Every time a “warm body” walks by the counters, thermal cameras track them. This heat-activated technology runs 24/7, providing true walking traffic data for strategic downtown locations.
Pedestrian counters located throughout downtown Victoria provide valuable insights into how people move through the city. This data helps us track trends over time, identify busy areas, and better understand how downtown is being used by residents and visitors.
Monitoring pedestrian activity also helps demonstrate the importance of a vibrant, walkable downtown. The information collected supports planning, advocacy, and initiatives that encourage people to shop, dine, work, and spend time in the city centre.
