Poet Laureate Legacy Tree

The Poet Laureate Legacy Tree by Glenn Closson is a 15-foot steel sculpture in downtown Victoria that weaves together poetry and public art. Featuring a ribbon inscribed with Carla Funk’s poem “Hide and Seek”, the tree playfully blends organic form with urban infrastructure, inviting reflection and discovery.

The Poet Laureate Legacy Tree is a striking 15.5 foot tall steel sculpture by Glenn Closson, unveiled in 2009 at the corner of Broughton and Government Streets in Victoria, British Columbia. Designed to appear as though it has organically grown around a city lamppost, the sculpture features hundreds of forged metal leaves and a flowing steel ribbon engraved with the poem “Hide and Seek” by Victoria’s first Poet Laureate, Carla Funk. This playful yet elegant piece invites public interaction and discovery, even hiding an old English penny in its base as a subtle nod to the poem’s title. Commissioned through a civic collaboration, the tree blends art, literature, and local identity. Closson, a skilled metal artist and founder of Crescent Moon Forge, is known for his handcrafted works found throughout the city. Funk’s poetry, deeply influenced by her rural Mennonite upbringing, brings a lyrical and reflective quality to the installation, transforming the downtown corner into a quiet and meaningful cultural landmark.
