Kwakiutl Bear Totem Pole

A Guardian Spirit in Wood and Tradition

The Kwakiutl Bear Totem Pole stands in Thunderbird Park as a powerful symbol of strength and guardianship in Kwakwaka’wakw tradition, carved to honour the stories and spirit of the bear.

The Kwakiutl Bear Totem Pole, located on the grounds of Thunderbird Park beside the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, is a vibrant example of traditional Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) carving. The pole prominently features a bear figure, a powerful symbol of strength, protection, and family in Kwakwaka’wakw culture. Often depicted with a cub or human figure in its grasp, the bear represents a guardian spirit and a connection between the natural and spiritual worlds. Originally carved by Mungo Martin, a master carver and cultural leader, this pole reflects the rich storytelling traditions and artistic legacy of the Northwest Coast peoples. Standing tall among other totems in the park, it serves as a visual reminder of the enduring presence and cultural contributions of Indigenous peoples in British Columbia.
