Knowledge Totem
Honouring Indigenous Wisdom and Cultural Continuity
The Knowledge Totem, carved by Coast Salish artist Cicero August, stands near the Royal BC Museum as a powerful symbol of Indigenous knowledge, tradition, and cultural continuity.
The Knowledge Totem is a striking 12.2-metre (40-foot) red cedar pole located near the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, British Columbia. Carved by Coast Salish artist Cicero August of the Cowichan Tribes, the totem was raised in 1999 as part of an initiative to recognize and celebrate Indigenous knowledge, culture, and resilience. The totem’s figures represent teachings passed down through generations, symbolizing the importance of education, oral tradition, and the sacred connection between humans, animals, and the natural world. Standing prominently along the Inner Harbour, the Knowledge Totem invites reflection on the role of Indigenous ways of knowing within British Columbia's shared history and future.
