Mother’s Day is coming up quick (on Sunday, May 10th) and, in these physically distant times, figuring out an appropriate and safe way to show the moms in your life some extra love might be harder than in other years. Thankfully, many of downtown Victoria’s small businesses are open and ready to make the day special, even if celebrations still have to be from afar for a little while longer. And if you don’t see your favourite downtown shop below, give them a call or reach out to them on social media to see how they can help make this Mother’s Day as wonderful as possible.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert

Moms love us, care for us, and make sure to feed us well as they watch us grow. Return the favour this year with a special homemade meal or order from her favourite restaurant; so many of downtown Victoria’s restaurants and cafes have pickup and delivery options.

Whether it’s breakfast from Shine Cafe, a build-your-own bundle from Nourish Kitchen, or a grocery delivery from the V-Unit to make her a classic Village breakfast in bed, nothing beats a solid start to the day. If she’s a “coffee is all the fuel I need” type of gal in the morning, then opt for a lunchtime or dinner date instead. Or surprise her with a sweet treat from The Dutch Bakery, Crust Bakery, Chimoto Dessert, Fol Epi Yates, Venus Sophia Tea Room, or one of downtown’s many other delectable destinations.

Relaxation station

If she’s not a big foodie, there are other thoughtful things to do for mom this year and maybe some solo relaxation time is just what she needs. Local artisans and boutique shops have put together perfect little gift sets for a day full of pampering at home. Send some love from SALT or pick out something she’ll love to wear from Migration. Get soothing scents from Amelia Lee’s apothecary delivered or find more pretty smells and stylish gifts for mom’s lovely home from Rook & Rose. The Tuscan Kitchen also has a special Mother’s Day offering that could make for a great surprise.

Nurture mom’s growth

Like Mother Nurture interests, hobbies, and talents in those around them, help mom reconnect with her own hobbies and hidden talents by putting together a different kind of opportunity for relaxation. Order art supplies from Opus, get her started on a new knitting project with beautiful colours from Beehive Wool Shop, or arrange for mail order or curbside pickup from Button and Needlework Boutique. Maybe a puzzle or new book can help her decompress too. (Oscar and Libby’s, Munro’s Books, Russell Books, and other shops in downtown Victoria have those areas covered.)

Flowers and plants for the mother with a green thumb

If mom’s happy place is with her hands in the dirt, Capital Iron offers remote ordering and virtual shopping options, as well as free local delivery on purchases over $50, for those spring gardening needs. A lovely bouquet is sure to brighten up mom’s day too so place an order with Brown’s The Florist, Flowers on Top, or Poppies Floral Art to get it delivered in time for Sunday.

Wine, beer, and more good cheer(s)

If physical distancing means this year’s celebration of mom needs to be held from a safe distance, still make the time to (virtually) bond and create new memories together. Have a beer together or share a glass of wine online and get mom to share some of her favourite stories. (Liquor Express, Swans Liquor Store, and The Strath Liquor Store are open for pickup or delivery so you can both enjoy your favourite adult beverage together, apart.) Or plan happy hour and enjoy a concert on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., listening to Canadian jazz while saying “cheers” to mom.

Happy Mother’s Day, Victoria!

Whether you’re celebrating your mother, the mother of your children, or your best mom friends this Sunday, take a moment to show your appreciation for all of the hard work that they put in. Go all out and plan a whole day of surprises, drop off that thoughtful gift (or get it delivered), and give the moms you love most an extra reason to smile while supporting our local small businesses. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!
