Victoria, meet Heidi, fantastic owner of two downtown spas. Heidi kindly shared her experience as a female downtown business owner prior to International Women's Day on March 8. Clearly, she deserved a post devoted to her insight.

I own and operate two downtown Victoria businesses – Sapphire Day Spa and Sattva Spa. I am continually inspired to operate in downtown Victoria as it is a remarkable place to do business.

The plethora of local businesses, the historic buildings, and spectacular harbour views make me even more committed to operating successfully.

Balance for Better

This year’s International Women’s Day campaign, #BalanceforBetter, is inspiring. While I am privileged to work in an industry dominated by women, I have at times been isolated and underestimated in our business community.

I love that the downtown Victoria business community has become increasingly collaborative. I see businesses wanting to ensure that no one is left behind in their quest to be successful and follow their passion.

Never sacrifice your integrity

I have two pieces of advice for those looking to start a new business. The first is to acknowledge that running a small business is going to take up a large part of your life. To be truly satisfied, you have to do what inspires you and never sacrifice your integrity. The second is to ensure that you have a rock-solid support network to lean on. Being an entrepreneur can be isolating, lonely and tiring.

The road to success is never as sweet when taken alone.
