Hi! Becca here to steal the blog this week to write about something very close to my heart…

You’ve probably heard it already:

We rely too heavily on single-use plastics.

Our planet can’t handle the garbage we’re producing.

Packaging and other plastics don’t always get recycled properly.

Plastic can only be recycled a handful of times before becoming garbage.

Petroleum products (plastics) take hundreds of years to decompose. As they degrade, tiny plastic particles (microplastics) get into our food and water, and inevitably into our bodies.

Meanwhile, improperly discarded plastic waste ends up in the ocean where ingestion harms wildlife, especially our beloved sea critters.

Phew! That’s a lot of garbage. Luckily, Downtown Victoria is your place to be waste-free (or at least, waste-minimizing).

Whether you’re ready to take the plunge into the zero-waste movement or you’re simply interested in dipping your toes in waste-reduction, Downtown Victoria’s got you covered:

The Essentials

These downtown stores are perfect for starting your journey!

All the essentials to get you started are at West Coast Refill!

Food

If you’re looking to minimize your food waste, here are some awesome downtown options:

The Zero Waste Emporium is your one-stop-shop for plastic-free groceries!

Beauty + Personal Care

Downtown Victoria has many choices for refillable or minimal waste beauty and personal care products:

Nezza Naturals sells all sorts of lovely beauty products with minimal plastic packaging! Pictured is their collection of Elate Cosmetics.

Now that you’ve got some waste-free resources, have a look around your home and see what changes you could make. Buy spinach and tomatoes, not in the clamshell, purchase nice pump bottles for refillable hand soap, shampoo, dish detergent, and laundry detergent, and grab a refillable compact for makeup from a local supplier, and a safety razor for shaving. You’ll be surprised how much plastic is in your life once you start paying attention. Every little bit helps!

I hope this has you thinking about your work and life in downtown Victoria.

Thanks for reading, pals! This is Becca, signing off ❤️
