“We are excited to bring our Senior Women’s National Team to Victoria in June and host Japan, the defending silver medalists at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” said Denise Dignard, General Manager / Executive Vice-President, Women’s High Performance. “Not only will this game give players and staff valuable international experience, but the unique opportunity to play on home soil in front of passionate Canadian fans, as well as family and friends.”
“On behalf of our Senior Women’s National Team, I’d also like to extend my sincere appreciation to We The West, the local organizing committee as well as all our partners for their support in making this a reality as we begin to prepare for Paris Olympic qualification.”
Rim-to-Rim will celebrate the Pacific Rim rivalry between Canada and Japan and will represent the first time in over 20 years that Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team has played a game in Victoria.
The Rim-to-Rim matchup will also mark the start of Team Canada’s march to the Paris Olympics 2024. Ahead of the game, Canada will host their first training camp in Edmonton, Alberta, home of the Senior Women’s National Team since 2013, from May 22-29.
Coming off a fourth place finish at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022, the team’s best finish at the World Cup since a third-place finish in 1986, the Senior Women’s National Team is now looking ahead to this summer’s FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023, which will run July 1-9 in León, Guanajuato in Mexico.
Ten teams will participate in this year’s FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023 with eight teams advancing to the FIBA Women’s Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament for the Americas, November 5-13, while the top two teams will move directly to the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024 in February.
Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team is ranked fifth in the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike, after the rankings were updated following the conclusion of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022.
