Not your average cliched comeback story, Canadian rock veterans Econoline Crush are rising up with an arsenal of new songs, and an extraordinary live show. Recording their first full-length album in over a decade, When The Devil Drives will showcase the best songwriting yet to come from frontman Trevor Hurst. Due in Winter 2022, the new album is authentically Econoline Crush in vibe, but built with modern sounds, with new songs that run the gamut from triumphant to heart wrenching.
Since the days of touring the world with peers, opening for Alice Cooper, Green Day, KISS and more, Hurst took time away from being a rockstar to become a psychiatric nurse, and worked on the Canupawapka Dakota Nation in southwestern Manitoba, the subject of a documentary series to come. Reconciling his past and nurturing the desire to connect with people to make a difference, he re-emerged into music feeling revitalized, focused, and motivated. Gathering the band to record demos in several studios, the process came together with producer Ian Alexander Smith, who brought life to several new songs, before the album went to Grammy-award winning, legendary engineer Jack Joseph Puig for mixing.
But rhapsody of Econoline Crush’s rebirth hasn’t been easy. In early March 2020, the band signed to Sakamoto Agency for live bookings, and we know what happened for the next two years. A label deal turned sour, with the band suffering losses on investment and time. A huge blow was dealt with the untimely loss of Hurst’s friend and Econoline’s long-time guitar player David “Ziggy” Sigmund in March 2022. Through it all though, bonds have only strengthened.
Now more focused and unrelenting than ever, with a record set for release, live shows on the calendar, a distribution deal and dedicated team, Econoline Crush are moving forward stronger, faster, and ready to rock. The band is resolute in their goals to entertain, to incite emotion, to spread a positive message, and to bring people together with music. And in true Econoline Crush fashion, blow everyone away with their energetic performance.
On the latest efforts by the band, Hurst says “I realized what a great gift was bestowed upon us as a band and as individuals, to have this ability to make music and to entertain. I don’t take this for granted. That’s why everybody in the band feels this is not an opportunity to waste.”
